Crews respond to Ely Lake Shortstop

September 16 – Three Iron Range fire departments (Fayal, Eveleth, Gilbert) responded late this afternoon to a possible fire at the Ely Lake Shortstop in Fayal Township. The incident was reported around 5:40 p.m. Firefighters quickly determined that there was no active fire, although there was some smoke in the building. The source of the smoke was not found. The Eveleth and Gilbert departments were cancelled while enroute. The Eveleth Police Department, which serves Fayal Township, provided traffic control at the scene.

Cabin fire in Fredenberg Township

September 13 – Firefighters from Fredenberg Township were dispatched tonight to a cabin fire. Here’s the official media release courtesy of the St. Louis County Sheriff’s Department.

Vehicle fire in Pike Township

September 15 – Pike~Sandy-Britt firefighters battled a pick-up truck fire this afternoon in the 5900 block of County Road 21 in Pike Township. The call came in around 2:10 p.m. The vehicle was a total loss. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Cherry FD seeks more people!

The Cherry Fire Department is seeking folks interested in joining the organization. The department serves an area east of Hibbing from its main station located on State Highway 37.

Hibbing schedules Open House

The Hibbing Fire Department will be hosting an Open House at its headquarters on Brooklyn Drive. A variety of activities have been scheduled.

Embarrass FD seeks personnel

August 7 – The Embarrass Region Volunteer Fire Department (ERVFD) is seeking community minded individuals for its EMS and firefighting operations. Please see the information in the picture posted below.

Hibbing voters to decide funding for public safety building

Later this fall, voters in Hibbing will be asked to approve funding for a proposed public safety building that will house the police department, fire department, and ambulance service. The current facilities have outlived their usefulness. In the case of the fire department and ambulance service, the building is actually crumbling and falling apart. The police headquarters is cramped and lacks the space needed for efficient operations. To help fund the new facility, a sales tax has been proposed. More information about the tax is listed below. French Township campfire explosion kills one and injures over six

A Hibbing man is dead and seven others were injured in an explosion at a campfire in French Township. Here’s the media release from the St. Louis County Sheriff’s Department.

Babbitt garage fire

August 29 – The Babbitt, Ely, and Embarrass fire departments were dispatched this evening to a garage fire in Babbitt. The fire was reported around 6:10 p.m. on Basswood Circle. Due to a quick response by Babbitt crews, the fire was quickly contained to the interior of the garage. An ATV, riding lawnmower, and the contents inside the garage were a total loss, along with the garage itself. The Ely and Embarrass fire departments were cancelled and the Babbitt Ambulance Service provided medical standby at the scene. No injuries were reported. While the cause of the fire remains under investigation, it is speculated that the blaze started shortly after the riding lawnmower was driven into the garage.

Hibbing firefighters rescue child from tree

August 27 – Hibbing firefighters were dispatched this morning to rescue a young boy who had become trapped in a tree. The incident was reported in the Birch Court Apartment Complex on 40th Street East in Hibbing. The adventurous youngster climbed up the tree, but later became scared to climb down. Hibbing firefighters used a ground ladder to climb up the tree and assisted the boy in climbing back down.

Hibbing firefighters, using a ground ladder, were able to assist the young boy in climbing down the tree.
