Mass Casualty Exercise Held in Eveleth
September 25, 2003 – Eveleth firefighters and ambulance
personnel were put to the test during a mass casualty exercise involving a
transit bus and a passenger car. According
to fire department officials, the drill involved six victims with various
injuries. “This was a challenging
drill because we had to extricate victims from the car and the bus,” said Fire
Chief Mike Lenich. “We had to
remove the car’s roof and the bus had its own challenges, especially since the
entrance door was jammed. We
learned a lot!” Ambulance
Director Laura Korpi said she was also pleased with the drill. “We were able to use some of our area first responders
along with EMS students from Mesabi Range Community and Technical College,”
said Korpi. “This drill gave
everyone a great opportunity to learn something.
Fortunately, we haven’t had any serious bus accidents in this area, but
now we have a better idea on how to handle them.”
