Eveleth Firefighters Rescue
Car Accident Victim From Mine Dump
May 15, 2002 – Eveleth firefighters and ambulance personnel were put to the test when they had to rescue an Eveleth area man from the Leonadis Overlook, located just west of Eveleth. According to fire department officials, the man’s vehicle went off the road and rolled some 200 feet down the mine dump. The man, who was reported to be in his 40’s, was thrown from the vehicle and sustained multiple injuries. Eveleth ambulance personnel quickly assessed the man’s injuries and called for an ALS ambulance from the Virginia Fire Department. Eveleth firefighters then used their low angle rescue equipment and a Stokes Basket to lower the victim down the steep mine dump embankment to a waiting ambulance. The man was taken to the Virginia Regional Medical Center and then airlifted to a Duluth area hospital. The accident, which was reported around 5:45 p.m., is under investigation by the St. Louis County Sheriff’s Department.
