Duluth’s Fire Station 6 Renovated

Duluth Fire Station 6, located in the city’s Lakeside area at 51st Avenue East and Superior Street, underwent a major renovation last year.  The firehall, built in 1911, had become very crowded with the newer apparatus and the dormitory space was almost non-existent. “It just wasn’t a good place to be stationed at,” said one of the Station 6 firefighters.  “Now, it’s a nice place.”

Rather than construct a new building, city officials opted for the remodeling.  During the reconstruction (April-November, 2001), firefighters took up residence in a mobile home near the Lakeside city garage, where the engine was also temporarily located.  The cost of the renovation was put at $632,000.  The fire station also houses a Duluth Police Department sub-station.

The renovation of Duluth Fire Station 6 left the original front end of the building intact; a tribute to the fire hall's long and distinguished history of service.  The building was Duluth’s first fire hall to be constructed for motorized apparatus.  One of the station’s inside wood walls also remains as a reminder of the building’s history.
