Fire Destroys Central Lakes Trailer House

Three Departments Battle The Blaze

December 20, 2000- Firefighters from the Iron Range communities of Central Lakes, Fayal Township, and Makinen battled a trailer home fire on the Townline Road in Central Lakes. The blaze was reported around 4:15 p.m. and was originally reported as a furnace fire. When Central Lakes firefighters arrived on the scene, the home was fully involved. One Fayal firefighter apparently suffered smoke inhalation and was treated at the scene. Fayal Fire Chief Steve Shykes told The Northland Fire Wire that fighting the fire was difficult because the structure actually consisted of two trailer homes joined together. "We had to cut out walls between the two trailers and we had a double ceiling to contend with," said Shykes. "We were making progress, but then the roof started to give way and we had to resort to an exterior attack." The cause is believed to be a chimney fire. No other injuries were reported. The house was a total loss.
